Mark June 13 down as the night the season went completely haywire for the 2026 Cleveland Guardians.
The Guardians were sitting at the top of the AL Central, firing on all cylinders, and looking like a squad that had finally completely meshed. Then, in the span of just a few innings against the Tigers, everything changed. In one night, we watched José Ramírez, Angél Martínez, and Chase DeLauter all go down with injuries. It was a brutal, catastrophic gut-punch that threatened to derail everything the Guardians had built this season.
The news on Ramírez ended up being one of the worst possible outcomes, as he's going to miss all of July following hamate surgery. While we know the Guardians won’t be fully whole until the GOAT is back at third base, but DeLauter's looming return is the exact shot in the arm this club needs right now.
Chase DeLauter's return will help the Guardians
The Crash
DeLauter’s injury was pure hustle, the kind that makes you cheer and cringe at the same time. He was tracking a deep fly ball in the first inning of that game against the Tigers. He gave it his all and hit the outfield wall hard, which resulted in a small right side rib fracture.
The good news? Out of the big three who went down that fateful night, DeLauter looks poised to be the first one to make it back to the active roster. And his timing couldn't be better.
DeLauter's Presence
When DeLauter was slotted into the No. 2 hole earlier this season, he completely altered the geometry of the Guardians' lineup. What he brought to the top of the order wasn't just raw talent; it was an unshakeable consistency.
At no point this year has DeLauter looked or approached the game like a rookie. Even during stretches where the hits weren't dropping or the home run power dipped, his value to the offense never wavered.
He doesn't panic. He works deep counts, fouls off tough pitches, and forces starters to throw seven or eight pitches just to get an out.
He stretches the strike zone and forces pitchers into mistakes, serving as the perfect bridge to lengthen the entire lineup.
Pitchers look visibly frustrated facing him because he simply refuses to give away an at-bat.
That kind of high-IQ presence near the top of the card is a massive luxury, and its absence has been glaring over the last two weeks.
In his absence, Khalil Watson got the call up from Triple-A Columbus and has done a commendable job trying to hold down the fort. You can’t fault the kid’s work ethic, and he's given Cleveland some solid reps, and driven in some clutch runs.
But let’s be honest Watson just doesn't possess that same imposing, game-altering presence that DeLauter brings to the box. When DeLauter's is standing in the batter's box, the entire energy of the inning shifts. Opposing managers have to manage differently.
Losing J-Ram hurts like hell, and there's no shifting that reality. But getting a healthy DeLauter back in right field gives Stephen Vogt his premier table-setter back.
If he can step right back into that professional mindset, work his walks, and anchor the top of the order, the Guardians have more than enough grit to get back atop the Central while the rest of the cavalry gets healthy.
