If you were looking for a sign that the Cleveland Guardians' 2026 season was going to be special, Chase DeLauter spent the first week of the season giving it to you in loud, thunderous fashion.
The hype around DeLauter has been building for years, but what he did in his regular-season debut series in Seattle was the stuff of legends.
Manager Stephen Vogt threw him right into the fire by batting him in the No. 2 spot in the lineup in hsi debut, and DeLauter didn’t just arrive; he took over opening week.
After a week of watching him dismantle Major League pitching, it’s officially clear: the Guardians have found the perfect piece to anchor the top of this lineup.
Chase DeLauter has helped unlock the Guardians' lineup
The debut of dreams
Let’s talk about that Opening Day. DeLauter stepped into the box for his first official regular-season at-bat and launched a towering home run. He followed that up with another go-ahead blast in the ninth inning, finishing the night with three hits and two home runs.
It didn’t stop there. He added two more home runs over the weekend, totaling four longballs in his first four games, earning himself AL Player of the Week honors in his first week on the job.
It was the most electric debut we've seen in Cleveland in a generation, and it proved exactly why Vogt has so much faith in the kid.

The Kwan-DeLauter-Ramírez sandwich
The logic behind putting DeLauter in the 2-spot is infallible.
Not only do you have the ultimate table-setter in Steven Kwan leading off, you also have José Ramírez looming behind DeLauter.
By sandwiching DeLauter between Kwan and Ramírez, Vogt is forcing opposing pitchers into an impossible dilemma.
If they pitch around Kwan, they have to face a rookie with elite power and barrel-to-ball skills. If they try to get cute with DeLauter, they risk putting runners on for Ramírez with nobody out.
This trio has the exact kind of punch this lineup has been missing. It already had a mix of elite contact and game-changing speed, and now it has legitimate middle-of-the-order power.
A minor score before the homecoming
Of course, it wouldn't be Cleveland baseball without a little bit of anxiety. During the series against the Dodgers, DeLauter gave us all a heart attack when he fouled a ball off his foot and had to be helped off the field.
The Good news is that X-rays came back negative. It’s being called a foot contusion, and Vogt has already said it was a "best-case scenario" situation. DeLauter sat out the series finale in L.A., but with a scheduled off-day following, the hope is that he’ll be ready to rock for the Home Opener later today

DeLauter isn't just a prospect anymore; he’s a focal point. His power is a welcomed sight for a team that has struggled to find home run threats in the outfield for years.
If he can stay healthy and keep that smooth lefty stroke going, the Kwan-DeLauter-Ramírez trio is going to be a nightmare for the AL Central all season long.
