The first four games of Kahlil Watson’s MLB career went about as poorly as they could have.
After making his debut with an 0-for-4 showing against the Brewers, he appeared in three games in the Guardians’ next series against the Houston Astros and went 0-for-8 with six strikeouts.
Not only did it leave a lot to be desired, but it also made it seem like he could have ashort stay on the Guardians’ roster.
Then the Guardians went to Chicago, and Watson was able to put all of that in the rearview mirror.
While Cleveland only won one of the three games they played against the White Sox this week, Watson did his part to help the Guardians by going 5-for-9 across the three games of the series with one home run and six RBI.
Three of those RBI came in Cleveland’s win on Wednesday when he picked up a go-ahead two run single in the sixth inning before once again giving the Guardians the lead with an RBI single in the tenth inning.
If this week was an announcement of the newest iteration of the Guardians’ rivalry against the White Sox, Watson also announced himself as Chicago’s newest villain.
“I think I’ll forever remember Chicago. First everything (in my career),” Watson said after the game, per MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins. “I think that whenever I play here, I’ll do something good, probably, too. Yeah, I love this city now."
Kahlil Watson had his first signature series against White Sox
After entering the series with an ice-cold Baseball Savant page, Watson’s added some red to his profile thanks to a 50% hard-hit rate, 16.7% barrel rate and an average exit velocity of 94.4 miles per hour.

Now, some of that obviously speaks to the volatility that comes with small sample sizes. But it also is an example of why Watson deserved some patience after his rough start.
Although he’s always struggled with swing-and-miss throughout his career, Watson also has legitimate speed and power, which were on full display against the White Sox.
Watson opened the series on the bench before coming off the bench in the seventh inning and racking up a two-run single off Grant Taylor that kept the Guardians in the game.
A day later, he launched a fastball from Sean Burke 373 feet into the seats in right field for his first career home run.
He was back at it again yesterday with his two-run single followed by the go-ahead hit.

He also made some great defensive plays in the outfield, which is a great sign considering he started his career as a middle infielder before shifting to a full-time outfielder in 2024.
While the Guardians lineup is at its best with outfielders Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez, Watson showed that he’s ready to carry some of the load while they’re on the injured list.
