The Cleveland Guardians middle-infield has seemingly been up in the air for the better part of a decade.
There's perhaps no position that shows that more than shortstop, as the Guardians haven't had a clear option there since since Fransisco Lindor was traded after the 2020 season.
It's been a revolving door of solid backup options who were thrust into everyday roles (think of Amed Rosario or Yu Chang).
Second base has been more consistent, thanks to the presence of Jason Kipnis and Andrés Giménez, though things took a step back last season.
But all of those problems have changed this season, although that change has led to some new problems the Guardians need to solve.
Here's a blow-by-blow of how things have gone this seaosn
The Cleveland Guardians' middle-infield has gone on quite a journey in 2026
Spring training expectations
Shortstop was a somewhat contested position this year when the Guardians headed to Goodyear for spring training.
Gabriel Arias and Brayan Rocchio were the two favorites for the middle-infield spots due to their experience and contract situations, while Juan Brito and Angel Genao were longshots.
Second base was more contested. Arias and Rocchio were again the favorite to snag the spot, but Brito and Travis Bazzana made a push to take one of the spots thanks to a strong World Baseball Classic.
Opening Day
As most people expected, Arias was the Guardians' shortstop on Opening Day, while Rocchio was at second base. Bazzana and Brito started in Columbus though it seemed clear that they would get a shot in the majors sooner than later.Â
The injury
It looked just two weeks for that picture to change, as Arias went down with an hamstring injury that opened a door in the infield.
Rocchio moved over to shortstop after the injury, and Brito was called up from Triple-A to man second base.
But that dind't last long, as he struggled in first taste of big league action. After a couple weeks of struggles, the Guardians decided to call up Bazzana at the end of April.
The returns
The decision to call up Bazzana has looked like an obvious win for the Guardians, as he's looked made like the Guardians' second baseman of the future and Rocchio has played like a long-term option at short.
Bazzana may have started off slow, but his elite plate discipline kept him as a valuable piece in the lineup. Bazzana entered Thursday's game with a batting average of .282 with an OPS of .806, 12 extra base hits and eight steals.
Rocchio is also having a career season where he's hit .289 with an OPS of .777, 14 extra base hits and 11 steals.
What it means
The arrivals of Bazzana and Rocchio have helped to lengthen the lineup.
JosĂ© RamĂrez has more talent around him than he has had in a long time, and as a result the offense is producing at levels that it has not reached in many years.
Baseball is a sport where things can change quickly, but barring anything unexpected Cleveland should have their answer in the middle of their infield for this season and beyond
The biggest lingering question the Guardians need to answer is what to do with Arias. He began a rehab assignment last night which opened his 20 day window to return, so Cleveland's going to need to make some kind of decision about him soon.
