The Gabriel Arias hype train came to a screeching halt on Monday when he left the Guardians’ game due to left hamstring tightness.Â
But it could also be an injury that could help a new hype train leave the station.Â
After the game, manager Stephen Vogt told reporters that Arias was going to undergo imaging for the injury, and that the teams should know more soon.Â
And if that injury causes Arias to miss any time, the Guardians could use this as an opportunity to call up middle-infield prospects Travis Bazzana or Juan Brito.Â
Gabriel Arias’ injury could help usher in new era of Guardians baseballÂ
While Brito stands out as the likely option to be called up due to the fact he’s already on the 40-man roster and can move all around the diamond, the Guardians have a chance to swing for the fences by adding Bazzana (who isn’t on the 40-man roster).Â
He boasts less versatility and can only play at second base, but they could easily open that space up by sliding Brayan Rocchio back over to shortstop.Â
He went to shortstop yesterday after Arias left the game and made a fantastic defensive play in the top of the eighth inning before slugging a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.Â
Both Brito and Bazzana have played well in Triple-A Columbus this season. Brito’s hit .314 in nine games with five doubles while Bazzana has a .316 on-base percentage and has already recorded a walk-off single.
Angel Genao is the only other middle infielder on the 40-man roster (along with Brito), but he’s just 21 and has yet to play above Double-A.Â
A potential Brito promotion is incredibly intriguing given how the past year-plus has gone for him. He was one of the final cuts from Guardians’ camp last season and seemed poised to be one of the first players called up from the minors, but he ended up playing in just 31 games due to thumb and hamstring injuries.Â
It initially looked like that was going to make 2026 a make-or-break year for Brito since he’d be out of option years, but the Guardians were granted a fourth option year on him, which means he could be sent to the minors without punishment.Â
He’s going to make his big league debut at some point this year, and Arias’ injury may have jump-started that timeline.Â
And then there’s Bazzana. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, he’s slowly climbed up the Guardians’ minor league rungs even as plenty of his fellow draftees have broken into the big leagues.Â
He made it to Triple-A last season before suffering a season-ending injury in September and has spent the first week of the minor league season showing his strong eye at the plate (even if his bat seems to be a bit behind).Â
Losing Arias would be a big blow for the Guardians considering he’s off to the best start of his career, but there are still some intriguing options waiting in the wings.
