After a pretty up-and-down start to the season, it was almost all down for the Guardians, as they limped to a 1-5 week capitalized by Gabriel Arias leaving Cleveland's game on Sunday with an ankle injury.
Here's what to know about that injury, as well as the other injuries on Cleveland's roster.
Guardians Injuries: Gabriel Arias carted off, Cade Smith, Trevor Stephen, Shane Bieber
INF Gabriel Arias
Arias was carted off the field on Sunday after spiking a cleat in the ground while trying to field a ground ball, and was officially diagnosed with an ankle sprain after the game. While the Guardians announced that the initial X-rays were negative, he'll undergo an MRI today to determine the severity of the damage.
“You hurt for him,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said, per MLB.com's Tim Stebbins. “You don't want to see anybody get hurt. Gabby's been awesome for us. He's been playing an amazing shortstop. [You’re] just scared. When you see somebody in that much pain, you don't know what it could be. So hopefully we get some decent news [Monday]. You just feel for him.”

If Arias has to miss any time, the team will likely recall Brayan Rocchio, who struggled at the start of the year before being sent down to Triple-A in the middle of May. Rocchio has hit .252 in 41 games in Triple-A.
RHP Cade Smith
Cleveland's relief ace was down for most of the week after he had some back spasms flare up on Wednesday, and he'll be another Guardian who will be evaluated today on the off day.
Smith has looked a little more pederterian this year after posted a 1.91 ERA in 75 1/3 innings last year. Smith has a 2.36 ERA in 34 1/3 innings this year. He hasn't pitched in more than a week.
Cade Smith had back spasms during pre-game workouts. They'll know more about that tomorrow, says Vogt.

RHP Shane Bieber
Bieber threw a 25-pitch bullpen session at Progressive Field on Wednesday, and is expected to throw some a live batting practice this week. Bieber began a minor league rehab assignment earlier this year but was taken off of it after he experienced some soreness in his throwing arm. That said, he consulted with the medical team and is back to throwing, which is a good sign.

The Guardians' rotation has been a bright spot this season, so there shoulnd't be a huge need to Bieber to push himself and eat a ton of innings if/when he returns to MLB. He hasn't pitched in a major league game in close to 16 months, so he'd likely go three or four innings a start early in his return.
RHP Trevor Stephan
Another pitcher working their way back from Tommy John, Stephan has made six rehab appearances so far this year across three different levels. He started the Arizona Complex League before moving to Triple-A Columbus before moving to Double-A Akron once Columbus started a road trip. He allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning in his outing on Sunday.

RHP Paul Sewald
Sewald is also rehabbing with Double-A Akron. He began his rehab assignment with two scoreless outings before allowing two runs in one inning on Sunday. He's been on the injured list since April and wasn't very effective before getting hurt, but the Guardians invested $7 million in him for a reason.
LHP John Means
Get ready for Cleveland's front office to say that Means counts as a deadline acquisition. Over the weekend, Guardians president Chris Antonetti said that Means has started to throw live batting practices in Arizona, and is due to return in late August or early September.
The Guardians signed Means, who is recovering from Tommy John, to a deal that includes a $7.5 million club option for next year, so it's clear that this year was always going to be about him being fully healthy for next year. Like Bieber, he'll likely only be able to go three or four innings once he returns.

Means timetable for return is late August to early September.
2B Travis Bazzana
The Guardians' top prospect, Bazzana suffered an oblique strain early this year, and has began throwing, swinging and running at the team's spring training complex in Arizona. He's still a bit away from participating in games, however.
