Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is as close to a lighting rod as you’re going to find in today’s MLB. He’s not afraid to speak his mind, has a gregarious personality and has the skillset to back it up.
While that skillset hasn’t led to as much success this year compared to years prior, he’s slowly started to heat up lately.
And he may have the Guardians to thank for it.
Last week, Guardians announcer Tom Hamilton threw some shade Chisholm’s way when he questioned why he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. And Chisholm responded by launching a home run the next day.
On Tuesday, the Guardians’ raucous “Tarps off” section tempted fate again by chanting “overrated” at Chisholm. While they won the first matchup in the fifth inning when Chisholm struck out, he got his revenge again in the eighth with a go-ahead home run against Tim Herrin.
“I love it,” Chisholm said of the chants “I feel like those were the loudest chants we heard. It was great.”

Jazz Chisholm Jr. silenced Guardians fans with big homer on Tuesday
Although Chisholm’s irked every team’s fanbase, he’s quickly rising the list of Guardians’ villains thanks to antics over the past two weeks (even if he’s gone just 3-for-20 against Cleveland this season).
He may not show up every game, but he always seems to make his presence known when the moment’s the biggest.
Chisholm’s homer also tightened the screws on the middle of the Guardians’ bullpen, which has now blown two straight games. Manager Stephen Vogt elected to send Tim Herrin out in the eighth after he pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Chisholm made him pay with a left-on-left homer.
Even though Chisholm’s had a bit of an inconsistent performance against the Guardians this week, he still has an .851 OPS against the Guardians (the third-highest total he has against a team he’s played 15+ games against).
It doesn’t help that he plays for the Yankees, who have always been a thorn in the Guardians’ side in recent years in their numerous matchups in the regular season and postseason.
Although the Guardians and Yankees are two of six teams in the AL above .500, the past 48 hours at Progressive Field have shown New York’s clearly in a class above the Guardians.
While the Guardians managed to pick up a big series win against the Yankees last week, Chisholm’s home run on Tuesday helped New York secure a key win over that means the Guardians can’t do better than splitting the season series against the Yankees.
The Yankees are always going to elicit a strong reaction among Guardians fans, and Chisholm’s spotlight stealing moments always seem to make it worse.
