On Tuesday, legendary Guardians radio voice Tom Hamilton ruffled some feathers in the Bronx when he made a tongue-in-cheek reference about Jazz Chisholm appearing on the Jimmy Fallon show despite having a subpar batting average.

A day later, Chisholm launched a solo home run against the Guardians that Yankees fans relished in a bit more thanks to Hamilton’s comments.

And we know they relished in that thanks to Yankees broadcaster Paul O’Neill’s reaction to the home run, where he said “how’s that for the Tonight Show” as Chisholm’s second inning home run sailed into the seats.

And Guardians fans weren’t having it.

Paul O'Neill's comments about Tom Hamilton didn't go unnoticed by Guardians fans

There are a variety of reasons why Guardians fans jumped over O’Neill. The obvious part is that it involved Hamilton, who is beloved among Guardians fans and was recently inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The second part is that it involved the Yankees, who are one of the Guardians’ top rivals and a team that most baseball fans love to hate. Chisholm is also an incredibly polarizing player considering he has no problem speaking his mind and showing his confidence.

Before the season Chisholm said that he was going to join the 50-50 club, but last night’s homer was just his seventh of the year.

The Yankees operate with a level of cockiness that no other team in MLB has, so any moment where they can get humbled is a bit exciting, and that’s exactly what Hamilton’s quip did.

And O’Neill’s comment would be different if it came in a win, but instead it came in an eventual loss thanks to a strong performance from Cleveland’s offense that was once again led by José Ramírez.

O’Neill obviously didn’t expect the Yankees to lose when Chisholm hit his game-tying home run, but the Guardians picking up the win put some egg on his face at a time when he wasn’t expecting it.

The Guardians and Yankees are no stranger to each other given the amount of times they’ve faced off each other in the regular season and postseason over the past four seasons, and it’s clear there’s some mutual admiration there between the two clubs.

But it’s also clear there’s no love lost between the two fanbases.

With the win, the Guardians improved their win total to 36, which is tied with the Yankees and Rays for the most in the American League.

The Yankees have one of the best (and most expensive) rosters in baseball, but the Guardians have been able to match them step for step this season thanks to a spunky roster that’s helped them pick up wins on and off the diamond.
