While the Cleveland Guardians entered play on Monday tied for the American League Central lead with a record of 1-514, they've yet to have a point this season where their roster has been firing on all cylinders.
If the Guardians want to continute to keep pace with Detroit, these three players are going to need to turn things around fast.
Tanner Bibee, Slade Cecconi and Kyle Manzardo need to bounce back in May
Tanner Bibee
It's clear that Bibee isn't off to the start that he or the Guardians anticipated, as he currently has an 0-3 record to go along awith a 4.45 ERA.
Although he does have 26 stirkeouts through his 30 1/3 innings of work, he has a 1.45 WHIP and has given up an opposing batting average of .275.
Luckily the Guardians rotation has been able to hold down the fort without him, as Gavin Williams has gone 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA while Parker Messick entered his start on Monday with a 1.76 ERA.
If the Guardians want to distance themselves from the Tigers and the rest of the AL Central, they will need Bibee to be better.
The easiest way for him to do that is limiting baserunners and hitting his spots on the corners of the strike zone. Easier said than done, but he's proven he can do it.
Slade Cecconi
Cecconi is another Guardians starter who is in need of bounce-back May after limping his way through April.
Cecconi currently has an unsightly 6.23 ERA through 30 1/3 innings with 25 strikeouts and 13 walks. He also leads all of basbeall with four losses.
While he's only made five starts, those numbers could put the Guardians in a tough spot even if we're only 29 games in an 162-game season.
Cecconi has given up 33 hits, 21 earned runs, and six home runs. As of right now, he and Bibee have the worst ERA, WHIP, and batting average against in the Guardians' rotation. Joey Cantillo has a .233 average against along with a 1.30 WHIP, but he's been able to limit damage and has an ERA of just 3.20.
As of right now, Cecconi and Bibee are hoping for a better May, both for themselves but also for the Guardians' overworked bullpen. Thankfully, there's still a ton of time left for him to turn things around.
Kyle Manzardo
Lastly we have Manzardo, who is in the midst of the worst month of his young career. The 25-year-old has hit .192 through his 25 game sof the season with one home run and six RBI, 30 strikeouts and just eight walks.
He hasn't shown any pop either, as he has just one double and one home run. He seems lost at the plate, which has impacted his ability to make quality contact and just get on base in general.
There is still time to turn it around for Manzardo, who is known for racking up homers in bunches. But at this point, the Guardians would settle for him racking up any kind of hit in bunches.
