Updated AL playoff picture after Guardians get the job done against Rockies

While no one is going to remember much about the 2026 Colorado Rockies as the years go by, they may end up playing a pivotal part in the story of the 2026 Cleveland Guardians. 

After limping through most of their games in August, the Guardians took full advantage of their “get right” series against the Rockies by recording a dominant sweep that helped thrust them back in the middle of the American League postseason picture. 

The Guardians now sit at 65-66 on the season, and are tied with the Rangers for the final AL Wild Card spot. 

Even if the Guardians’ wins over the Rangers don’t make up for the team’s listless effort earlier in the month, they’ve handled business in their past two series, which is what good teams do. The Guardians can’t control who they play; they can only control their effort. 

Even if the Rangers technically hold the spot by virtue of the head-to-head record tiebreaker, the Guardians have confirmed they’re not going to be going anywhere. 

While that statement may seem a bit obvious at face value given the Guardians have won back-to-back AL Central titles, it’s hard to overstate how much it seemed like the sky was falling at this time last week. 

Not only had the Guardians dropped all four of the series they had played in August, but they also fell to five games below .500. It seemed like the rest of the AL had passed them by. 

Things are a bit different now, as they boarded their flight to California on Sunday night with their sights set on something more than being on the fringes of the Wild Card race. 

“I love the way we’re playing,” manager Stephen Vogt told reporters after Sunday’s win. “Like I’ve been saying for a while, we just weren’t winning games. But I like the way we’re playing. The offense was tremendous these three days, and pitching continues to be great, and our defense has been really good as well.” 

The Guardians were able to right the ship with weekend sweep of Rockies 

With the win, the Guardians also kept pace with the White Sox, who picked up a walk-off win over the Mets. Even if that win means Chicago still holds a 3 1/2 game lead in the Central, the Guardians were able to make up some ground with their wins over the Rockies. 

And that wasn’t the only battle the Guardians gained ground in, as the Blue Jays, Twins, Orioles, Mariners and Tigers all lost on Sunday. 

The Blue Jays, Twins and Orioles are all within two games of the Guardians for the final Wild Card spot, but they all uneven performances over the weekend, which is a bit fitting given how flawed all the teams in the race are.

The Blue Jays and Twins are about to start winnable series against the Royals and Athletics, respectively, whereas the Orioles are about to play the Cardinals and the Mariners are taking on the Phillies. 

Speaking of upcoming series, the White Sox and Rangers are going to start a three-game series later today that’s going to give the Guardians a golden opportunity to gain even more ground (assuming Cleveland takes care of business against the Angels). 

No matter what, the Guardians know that a team they’re chasing is going to lose. You can’t ask for much more than that at the end of August.
