On Thursday afternoon, the Seattle Mariners’ braintrust decided to finally dip into their emergency prospect capital and call up top prospect Kade Anderson, who is largely regarded as the best pitching prospect in baseball.
But instead of Anderson’s promotion being a preview of what he could do in October, he’s going to be joining the Mariners at a time where they’re fighting to save their 2026 season.
The Mariners now sit at 60-68 after dropping their series finale against the Brewers on Thursday, and FanGraphs gives them a 32.1% chance to make the postseason.
Even if the Guardians won’t need to worry about facing Anderson for the rest of the season, his sudden addition to the AL postseason picture could end up helping the Guardians.
Kade Anderson could help improve the Guardians’ postseason odds
Although the Mariners’ postseason odds are disappointing considering they came within a game of making the World Series in 2025, their postseason odds are actually higher than the Guardians’ 30% odds thanks to the sordid state of the American League West.
Along with being three games back in the Wild Card, the Mariners entered play on Friday just four games behind the Astros in the American League West. The Rangers entered Friday holding the AL’s final Wild Card spot while being a game behind the Astros.
Which brings us to the Guardians, who hold the tiebreaker over the Mariners by virtue of a better head-to-head record, but don’t have one over the Rangers and Astros. Because of that, the Guardians should be rooting for the Mariners to do well enough to climb back into the postseason picture, but not do so well that they leapfrog Cleveland in the standings.
If the Guardians end the regular season tied with either the Astros or Rangers for a postseason spot, they’d be on the outside looking in because of the tiebreaker. But if they finish tied with the Mariners, they’d get the spot.
The best case scenario here is that Anderson helps the Mariners pick up some wins over some other AL postseason hopefuls, but that the rest of his team lets him down.
Anderson’s going to make his debut later today against the Cubs, which means that (if everything goes according to plan) his next three starts are going to come against the Blue Jays, Red Sox and Rangers — three teams the Guardians are chasing in the Wild Card standings.
The Guardians have a clear opportunity in front of them thanks to three straight series against teams with losing records followed by series against the Blue Jays and Tigers, but Anderson and the Mariners could provide some additional help as well.
That may seem like a lot of pressure for a rookie, but Anderson seems to be up to the task. The No. 3 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, he’s recorded a 1.06 ERA in 18 starts at Double-A this season while striking out 135 hitters and walking just 13.

While he may end up being a thorn in the Guardians’ side for years to come, his career-opening slate could allow for him to make some friends in Cleveland.
