It took all of one World Baseball Classic game for Travis Bazzana to become a hero for his home country.

While Team Australia was already leading 2-0 when Bazzana stepped up to the plate in the seventh inning inning of Wednesday night’s WBC opener, Bazzana notched his first signature moment of WBC play with an electric opposite field home run that served as the dagger in Australia's 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei.

And although it happened nearly 6,500 miles away from Progressive Field, Bazzana’s blast against Chinese Taipei could end up being the appetizer for an exciting summer at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.

Travis Bazzana’s WBC home run could be precursor of things to come in 2026

Not only did Bazzana’s home run come in the clutch, but it was also a tangible example of the work he’s put in to become a better hitter. Although he’s always had a great hit tool, there were some initial questions about his swing path and his ability to generate power.

One swing doesn’t take away those questions completely, but the fact that he was able to catch up to a 94 mile per hour fastball on his hands and pull it out of the park is a great sign.

It also was another great example of how he never seems scared of the moment. He showed that last season when he made his Triple-A debut and posted a .420 on-base percentage in 26 games, and he showed it in his first WBC game by smashing that aforementioned home run.

And, according to his comments after the game, it seems like he has his eyes set on more once he gets to Cleveland.

“The two things I thought about most growing up was playing in the WBC – thinking about the Tokyo Dome because we always come here – and obviously playing in the World Series in MLB. It’s special,” Bazzana said, per MLB.com’s Michael Clair.

While Australia was technically the home team in Wednesday’s game, the stands were filled with Chinese Taipei fans, so his blast served as a bit of a silencer. Though he was anything but silent after hitting it.

The homer is another chapter in what’s been a solid spring for Cleveland's top prospect. He managed to hit a soaring homer against the Dodgers in camp before he left for the WBC, and also stands to benefit from the new ABS system.

Although Bazzana isn’t on the Guardians’ roster, it’s looking more and more likely that he’s going to make his big league debut at some point during 2026. And when he does, don’t be surprised if he meets the moment right away.
