Rangers-White Sox series gives Guardians golden opportunity to gain ground in postseason race

We’ve officially reached the scoreboard watching part of the 2026 MLB season, and the Cleveland Guardians have put themselves right in the middle of the scoreboard watching group thanks to them being right in the middle of the American League Central race along with the Wild Card race. 

But their scoreboard watching should get a bit easier over the next three days thanks to the White Sox (who are the team ahead of the Guardians in the AL Central standings) welcoming the Texas Rangers (who are tied with the Guardians for the third AL Wild Card spot) facing off in a three-game series at Rate Field. 

While the Guardians’ main focus is obviously going to be on winning their upcoming three-game series against the Angels, Chicago and Texas facing off means that any win in that series is going to move them closer to one of their postseason spots. 

The Guardians have a chance to gain ground in their postseason races thanks to the White Sox and Rangers facing off

The Guardians are entering tonight’s game with a record of 65-66, which has them 3 1/2 games behind the White Sox in the AL Central along with being in a tie with the Rangers for AL’s final Wild Card spot. 

That said, both the Rangers and White Sox hold tiebreakers over the Guardians by virtue of better head-to-head records, which adds an additional complication. 

Even if the best result for the Guardians would be for the White Sox and Rangers to somehow lose all three games of their series, they’re in a bit of a unique situation where they know they’ll be able to gain some kind of ground with a win while also knowing they’d lose some kind of ground with a loss. 

Arguably the best outcome for the Guardians (assuming they sweep the lowly Angels) would be for the Rangers to win two out of three against the White Sox. 

That outcome would likely give the Guardians the AL’s third Wild Card spot (more on that in a second) while helping gain a bit more ground in the American League Central. 

The reason why that would likely give the Guardians the final Wild Card spot is because of the Houston Astros, who also have a 65-66 record but currently lead the American League West by virtue of their tiebreaker over the Rangers. 

The Astros have an off-day later today before starting a three-game series against the Yankees on Tuesday.

They also hold a tiebreaker over the Guardians, so Houston would still hold that final Wild Card spot should the Guardians sweep the Angels and the Astros sweep the Yankees. 

That said, the Astros just parted ways with general manager Dana Brown, so it’s clear that things aren’t going well over there. 

But that’s a secondary storyline compared to the White Sox’s series against the Rangers. 

That series will kick off later today with Kumar Rocker taking on a yet to be announced White Sox starter. Anthony Kay will go against Jacob deGrom in Tuesday’s game while the series will close with MacKenzie Gore taking on Sean Burke. 

Meanwhile, the Guardians are rolling out Parker Messick tonight against Angels starter Goerge Klassan. Gavin Williams is going to toe the rubber against promising rookie Walbert Ureña on Tuesday ahead of Joey Cantillo going against Grayson Rodriguez in Wednesday’s series finale. 

The Guardians should be able to win all three of those games. 

The Guardians have been able to claw their back into the postseason picture in the past week, and this week is a golden opportunity for them to gain even more ground.
