The 2025 season is just over a month old and it appears that the Cleveland Guardians have found their stride. Cleveland has won seven of their last 10 games en route to coming out on top in their third straight series. While this has been impressive to watch, the offense has not clicked just yet, that is until they began their series in Washington against the Nationals.
Thanks to Monday's game being postponed, the Guardians and Nationals played three games in just under 24 hours, and what Cleveland was able to accomplish in less than a day at the plate is quite impressive. The Guardians won two of three in Washington, with their 26 runs scored during that time being a primary reason as to why.
The Guardians have experienced some trouble carrying over their offensive production from game-to-game in the early going. Sure, there's been the occasional high-output game, but it is usually followed up by a letdown performance. Seeing Cleveland string together not one, not two, but three strong showings at the plate is an encouraging sign of what's to come.
Cleveland scored runs in bunches in all three games against Washington, with a six-run inning in Game 1, six runs scored over the final three innings in Game 2, and an eight-run inning on Wednesday. The Guardians managing to keep the pressure on Washington's pitching staff throughout the series appears to be evidence of an offense geting ready to go on an extended run of high performance rather than previous offensive no-shows that have taken place previously.
Each game was essentially a showcase for Cleveland's unsung heroes to shoulder the offensive workload. Nolan Jones went 2-4 with a home run and a double on Tuesday afternoon. Carlos Santana homered and drove in three while Daniel Schneemann's hot streak continued (2-2, 1 home run, 2 runs socred), and Austin Hedges hit his third long ball of the season. Gabriel Arias would go 4-5 on Wednesday, with Santana driving in three more runs via a bases loaded double.
Having players besides Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan be major contributors is a significant development for the Guardians. Jones has been off to an awful start in 2025, so seeing him make a positive impact is a step in the right direction. The contributions of Schneemann have been somewhat surprising, but he has definitely forced his way into being an everyday player right now, and no one should be complaining about that.
What Cleveland has gotten from Arias has been an unexpected yet welcome development, considering he has largely struggled in the majors previously. Meanwhile, Santana has turned his fortunes around at the plate, providing close to league average production from an OPS+ standpoint (96). Having Santana be a productive bat in the lineup is a game-changer for the Guardians, as he solidfiy the team's offensive floor while allowing others to raise its ceiling. This will be a key factor later in the season and eventually the playoffs, assuming they do qualify for spot in the 2025 MLB Postseason.
It sure seems like the Guardians offense has woken up for good, and that is just what this team needs. Cleveland's pitching staff has not performed up to expectations, placing a ton of pressure on their offense to do more than what should be reasonably expected of them. Ideally, Cleveland can get better outings from their pitchers so the offense does not have to score nearly nine runs per game in order to be successful. But for now, the Guardians will certainly take a red-hot offense as they get ready to face the Philadelphia Philles this weekend back in Cleveland.
