For the first month and a half of the 2026 season, Kyle Manzardo couldn't hit much of anything. While he gained 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason, he wasn't able to translate that into big league success despite posting solid batted ball metrics.
But the worm has finally started to turn for Manzardo, and the latest example of it produced some historic results.
On Friday, Manzarodo came off the bench to slug a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran to give the Guardians a 1-0 win. With the homer, Manzardo became the first Guardian to hit a go-ahead home run since Jason Giambi's memorable walk-off homer against the White Sox in 2013 (H/T to Cleveland.com's Joe Noga).

While Manzardo's homer didn't come as late in the season as Giambi's memorable walk-off that kept Cleveland alive in the postseason race, it's still an incredibly impressive feat that has provided the baseball world with yet another example the Guardians are for real.
Kyle Manzardo was the latest Guardian to play hero
At first it looked like the Guardians wouldn't be able to get much of anything going against Duran after José Ramírez was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, but Manzardo got a 97 mile per hour splitter over the middle and was able to poke it 364 feet to left field for the go-ahead jack.
It was the latest feat for the suddenly streaking Manzardo, who is now hitting .300 (15-for-50) with four home runs in May.
The homer was yet another tangible example of how dangerous the Guardians' lineup can be. While they didn't score eight runs (which would have been nearly impossible against Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez), they got just enough to win thanks to Manzardo and Gavin Williams.
“It just shows these guys that they know how to win,” manager Stephen Vogt told reporters after the game, per Noga . “Our guys know how to win and it’s going to look different every single night, but when it’s your opportunity, you step up.”
In the Guardians' series against the Tigers earlier the week, the heroes consisted of guys like Colin Holderman and Patrick Bailey. But on Friday it was a lot of Williams and a little Manzardo.
Williams matched Sánchez pitch for pitch and ended up finishing his night with 11 strikeouts across eight innings without any walks.
Free passes had always been the thing that held Williams back, but he's now allowed just three walks across four starts in May.
But the real star of the show was Manzardo, who hit a homer that harkened back to one of the best moments of the past 15 seasons of Cleveland baseball.
Even if Manzardo's homer didn't shoot through the crisp fall air like Giambi's, it came off one of the best pitchers in baseball in a clutch moment.
That's all you can really ask for at this point in the season.
