For a little more than two weeks, the Cleveland Guardians have had to survive without star third baseman José Ramírez after he broke the hamate bone in his left hand.
While they are still going to navigate life without Ramírez for a little bit longer, he’s about to take a huge step toward being able to make his return.
According to Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes, Ramírez is going to have the stitches from his hand removed on Tuesday and could start swinging a bat later this week so long as everything goes well.
Even if that isn’t as big of a step as actually getting Ramírez back, it’s still a pretty sizable step that proves the Guardians are a step closer to getting their superstar back.
The Guardians need José Ramírez back
It’s hard to overstate how much the Guardians have missed Ramírez. While his absence was magnified by the fact the Guardians lost Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez, his loss stands above the others because of how much he means to the Guardians.
Even if he wasn’t having the same kind of offensive season that we’re used to, he still was the heartbeat of the Guardians lineup. Prior to getting hurt, he posted a .239/.339/.418 slashline with 10 home runs, 33 RBI and 24 steals.
The Guardians have primarily relied on Gabriel Arias and Daniel Schneemann at third base in place of Ramírez.
While neither of them have set the world on fire, Arias provided the Guardians with a jolt on Monday with a game-tying home run that went 429 feet and left his bat at 107 miles per hour.

Ramírez also told Hoynes that he doesn’t feel like the injury is as severe as it was when he broke the hamate bone in his right hand in 2019. He ended up returning 30 games after the injury but was shut down again after the Guardians fell out of the postseason race.
The one “bright spot” from Ramírez’s injury this year compared to that one is that it occurred when there’s still a lot of baseball left to be played.
That said, his injury has still impacted the Guardians’ postseason chances, as they’ve gone 5-8 since Ramírez has gotten hurt and are a game behind the White Sox after losing their series opener to the Rangers on
Their lackluster offense has been a big reason for that. Guardians hitters entered Monday’s game hitting just .210 in the 13 games that Ramírez has missed, while their pitchers had tallied a 3.59 ERA in the same span.
Cleveland's listless performance against the Rangers tonight showed exactly how dire things are. They need more offense, and Ramírez is an easy solution to that problem. Even if we still need to play the waiting game for his return, Monday's update showed he's getting a bit closer to being able to fix the problem.
