What a run the Cleveland Guardians have been on over the last few week. After entering the weekend on a six-game winning streak after sweeping the Detroit Tigers on the road, the Guardians went to Philadelphia and took two out of three from the Phillies.
Not only has that strong run of play has given the Guardians a bit of cushion in the American League Central, but it's also confirmed they're a true contender in the American League.
The Guardians are in a great spot at the end of May
The Guardians enter play today nine games over .500 with a record of 32-23 while having a 4 1/2 game lead over the White Sox, who are 26-26.
The Guardians have built that lead by going 8-2 in their last 10 games, which is the best mark in the division over that span. The Twins (who are just one game under .500) are second at 7-3, which the White Sox have actually gone 5-5 in that span.
Cleveland's also in a good spot compared to the rest of AL. They have the second best record in the Junior Circuit behind the incredible Tampa Bay Rays (34-16). In total, the Guardians are one of four AL teams with a record above .500 along with the Rays, Yankees and Athletics.
Angel Martínez been one of the catalysts of the Guardians' strong play as of late, as he leads the team with nine home runs along with having 26 RBI. He's taken a huge step after struggling last year at the plate and in the field.
Another guy who's been showing out is Chase DeLauter who has seven home runs while also leading the team with 30 RBI. He hasn't looked anything like a rookie so far this season.
Although José Ramírez is hitting just .227, he's still found a great way to impact the game. He's walked 37 times compared to 33 strikeouts and has also racked up 20 stolen bases. He isn't getting on base at the same clip we've seen in years prior, but he's making the most of the opportunties when he does.
The Guardians' offense has still been able to score runs even with Ramírez's struggles, so they could be even scarier whenever he catches fire.
That offense has been backed by another strong performance by their pitching staff that's been led by Gavin Williams, Parker Messick and Cade Smith.
Overall the Guardians have been playing solid team baseball, and the results speak for themselves. While there is a ton of baseball left, Cleveland has proven it can be a true winner even though they entered the season with plenty of doubters.
If they're able to stay consistent then they should be a lock to three-peat in the AL Central.
