With Opening Day a little more than a week away, now is the time when teams begin to tighten their roster picture ahead of Opening Day.
And the Cleveland Guardians did exactly that on Monday; albeit in a way that’s a bit discouraging. In speaking to the team’s beat prior to the Guardians’ spring training matchup against the Cubs, manager Stephen Vogt confirmed that Bazzana won’t be making the Guardians’ roster out of camp.
Stephen Vogt also noted the Guardians officially informed Travis Bazzana, Dom Nuñez, Milan Tolentino and Pedro Avila they won't make the Opening Day roster.

They'll remain in camp for a few more days.
The Guardians should call Travis Bazzana up from the minors soon
While Bazzana is still set to make his big league debut at some point in 2026, Vogt’s comments confirmed that won’t happen in Cleveland’s season-opening series against the Mariners. And although that was still a longshot to happen, there was still some hope that the Guardians’ front office would be aggressive with him given how well he’s played this spring.
After opening spring training with a home run against the Dodgers, Bazzana went to the other side of the world and put on a show for Team Australia in the World Baseball Classic that included a home run in the tournament’s opening game.
But now he’s going to start the season at Triple-A, where he’ll get more reps against better pitching ahead of his eventual call-up.
“It's like I told him,” Vogt said, per MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins. “‘Go play, go stay ready.’ We know this kid's going to help us a ton and win a lot of games. But again, he needs to go play and get everyday at-bats and continue to develop.”
Last season Bazzana finished the year in Triple-A, where he posted a .225/.420/.438 slashline with four home runs and 14 RBI in 26 games before being sidelined by an oblique issue. Now he’s going to get a chance to build upon that performance while also having a much more clear path to make Cleveland’s roster.
While José Ramírez's injury could have opened the door for Bazzana to have an Opening Day roster spot, it seems like he’s doing much better and should be ready for the start of the season.
Brayan Rocchio and Gabriel Arias are the main middle-infield options the Guardians have on their roster, but neither one of them have proven they can put it together consistently at the big league level. They’ll both start the season as the Guardians’ top middle-infield options, but their time on the roster could be limited.
The other wrench in the works is fellow prospect Juan Brito, who may start the season at Triple-A alongside Bazzana but has already been added to the Guardians’ 40-man roster.
That could make him the first infield prospect called up during the season, not Bazzana.
But regardless of what happens with Brito, the Guardians clearly think that Bazzana is close to MLB-ready. Even if he won’t be with the Guardians on Opening Day, it seems like it won’t be long until we get to see him at Progressive Field.
