Guardians can undo their greatest offseason mistake with this one move at the trade deadline

Two years ago, the Cleveland Guardians plugged the biggest hole on their roster by trading three prospects to the Washington Nationals in exchange for Washington Nationals outfielder Lane Thomas. 

While the 2024 iteration of the Guardians had some early-season success, Thomas made sense as a clear acquisition due to the team’s left-handed heavy lineup that was a bit weak in the outfield. 

Sound familiar? 

While the Guardians and Thomas ended up parting ways in free agency, it seems like the Guardians are serious about adding him for a second time, as both Cleveland.com’s Terry Pluto and The Athletic’s Zack Mesiel mentioned Thomas as a potential Guardians trade target in their new stories outlining what Cleveland could do at the trade deadline. 

At first blush, a reunion with Thomas may seem confusing given he hit just .189 in 92 games with the Guardians, which is the biggest reason why Cleveland let him walk after the season. 

But a lot of those struggles can be traced back to the plantar fasciitis issues that plagued Thomas throughout his time in Cleveland, which seem to have subsided this season as he’s gotten back to being a productive player. 

Although the Guardians’ decision to let Thomas go made sense, they followed it up by making the stunning decision to tender a $2 million contract to Nolan Jones despite the fact he was coming off a disastrous season. 

To the surprise of no one, the Guardians outrighted Jones off their roster in the spring and have since traded him to the White Sox. Meanwhile, Thomas has put together a productive season that’s made the one-year, $5.25 million contract he signed with the Royals look like an absolute steal.  

Thomas entered the weekend with a .236/.334/.403 slashline along with having a .783 OPS against left-handed pitching. In other words, he’s looking like the kind of player the Guardians expected him to be when they traded a boatload of prospects for him two summers ago. 

Even if the Guardians’ initial trade for Thomas was a bit of a bust outside of postseason performance, a reunion with Thomas makes a ton of sense so long as the Royals are willing to play ball. 

Lane Thomas would be a perfect trade deadline fit for the Guardians (again) 

The most interesting angle to follow with a potential Thomas reunion is whether the Guardians are willing to invest even more prospect capital into him after they didn’t get a great return on investment the last time. 

But, luckily for Cleveland, it may not take as much to get Thomas this time since he’s going to be a free agent after the season. Last time around, the Guardians had to part with two top prospects (Alex Clemmey and Rafael Ramirez Jr.) along with a solid depth piece in José Tena.

While no one in that trio has set the world on fire, the loss of Clemmey has loomed large this summer due to the Guardians’ lack of pitching depth. 

Luckily for the Guardians, it wouldn’t take that much to get Thomas this year thanks to the fact he’s going to be a free agent after this season. If Thomas is available for, say, a fringe top-30 prospect, then the Guardians should pull the trigger on him ASAP. 

The biggest roadblock for a potential deal is the fact Thomas plays for another American League Central team, but the Guardians have shown a willingness to make inter-division trades in the past if they think it’s worth it. 

Not only is he healthy, but he fills an obvious hole on the roster. He also spoke highly of his time in Cleveland, which is always a plus. 

Even if the Guardians made the wrong decision in picking Jones over Thomas last offseason, they can make up for it at this year’s deadline.
