At some point this year, Travis Bazzana will make his big league debut for the Cleveland Guardians. But, until that happens, he’s going to be biding his time with the Columbus Clippers at Triple-A.

On Thursday night he provided a first-hand look at how his skillset can help the Guardians by lining a walk-off single into the left-center field gap to give Columbus a 9-8 win over the Indianapolis Indians, which is the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate.

After starting the game 0-for-4, Bazzana racked up two hits in his final two at-bats to salvage his evening. While Triple-A records don’t matter as much in the grand scheme of things, Bazzana’s hit was another highlight in what’s been a strong start to the season for Columbus.

Note: all stats are as of Friday morning.

Guardians’ Travis Bazzana continues to be a work-in-progress in the minors

With the walk-off hit, Bazzana’s now slashing .208/.345/.375 through six games with two doubles, a triple and five walks. That kind of production is right in line with how he did in his late-season cameo in Triple-A last season when he hit just .225 but had a .420 on-base percentage in 26 games.

Bazzana’s still clearly a work-in-progress when it comes to his ability to handle spin, but it’s clear that his command of the strike zone and eye are MLB-ready.

His walk-off was also made a bit sweeter since it came against the Pirates’ Triple-A team on the same day that Pittsburgh called up top prospect Konnor Griffin, who was drafted nine spots behind Bazzana in the 2024 MLB Draft and is currently ranked as the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball.

While the Guardians don’t have a spot for Bazzana on their big league roster (yet), he’s done well to prove that he’s inching in the right direction, even if his timeline is a bit behind that of some of his fellow draft compatriots.

The biggest thing to watch with Bazzana over the next month will be if he’s finally going to be able to hit for power against Triple-A pitching. He’s only recorded three extra-base hits so far this year (though his walk-off hit would have been a double had it not ended the game) and has yet to put a ball over the fence.

Although the Guardians don’t need him to be a 20+ homer infielder, he’s going to need to show some kind of power to live up to his billing as the No. 1 pick in the Draft.

But regardless of that, it only seems like a matter of time until Bazzana’s going to be electrifying the crowd at Progressive Field instead of Huntington Bank Field.
