While the Guardians’ 2023 season didn’t end with a postseason berth, it served as a breakout season for pitcher Xzavion Curry, who had a 4.07 ERA in 95 innings while pitching in a variety of roles.
At the time, it seemed like Curry was going to be a valuable part of the Guardians’ pitching core going forward. But any dreams about Curry becoming a mainstay in Cleveland’s rotation went away in 2024 when he had posted a 5.84 ERA in 24 2/3 innings before being designated for assignment.
He was claimed off waivers from the Marlins and had a solid 18 inning cameo for them in 2024, but he once again failed to carry that momentum into the following season when he was designated for assignment at the start of the 2025 season and only ended up pitching in three big league innings with the Marlins.
But now it looks like he’s going to get a chance to pave another big league path for himself after the Mets added him to their roster amidst what’s quickly becoming a lost season in Queens.
Xzavion Curry is back in MLB in the New York Mets' bullpen
The Mets officially added Curry to their roster on July 8 in place of right-handed pitcher Matt Seelinger, who was designated for assignment, and he made his season debut later that day with one inning in New York’s 6-2 win over the Royals.
Curry joined the Mets’ organization in May after opening the season with the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League. He had a 4.74 ERA in 49 1/3 innings in Triple-A this season, but is coming off a June where he had a 3.33 ERA in 27 innings with 19 strikeouts and eight walks.
That kind of performance is a good example of Curry’s profile, as he only has recorded 100 strikeouts in 151 innings in his big league career.
But when he was at his best with the Guardians, he was able to use his command and varied arsenal to get batters out.
While his fastball averaged just 90.8 miles per hour (two mph slower than where it was in 2023), his slider averaged 84 mph, which is four mph faster than where it was at last season.
Coming into the season, the Mets obviously didn’t expect for Curry to become such a big piece of their bullpen (he wasn’t on their roster at the beginning of the season), his call-up is an example of just how much their season has gone off the rails.
They already fired manager Carlos Mendoza after starting the season 34-47, but things haven’t been much better in the two weeks since.
Curry still has a minor league option remaining, so his stint with the Mets could end up being a short one if the Mets keep cycling through different options at the back of their bullpen.
But regardless of what happens, he already got a chance to make his big league return, which is a win in itself.
