Xzavion Curry's time with the Cleveland Guardians has come to an end. Just a few days after being designated for assignment by Cleveland, Curry has been claimed on waivers by the Miami Marlins.
The decision to DFA Curry was not necessarily a popular one, given the current state of the Guardians' pitching staff, but the front office determined that this was a move that needed to be made. While designating Curry in favor of Anthony Gose was a transaction that very few saw coming, this ultimately brought his time in Cleveland to an end.
Curry has been deployed in a variety of roles during his three seasons with the Guardians, appearing in 50 games during that span, 41 of which came last season. The only problem was Curry was never really able to grab a role and run with it, making it a bit easier to justify the DFA earlier this week.
Moving on from Curry would have been a tougher decision if he did not have a career 4.53 ERA or 1.403 WHIP, but his performance made this decision a bit more palatable in the organization's mind. Perhaps they would have thought differently if Curry was able to average more than 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings in his career, but he just is not a high-strikeout pitcher. This combination of average-at-best performance and underwhelming strikeout numbers essentially had him on borrowed time, and it is relatively easy to see why they have decided to take this path.
Perhaps Curry will be able to find a stable role in Miami for a Marlins team that is in relative shambles at this moment. They are nowhere near competitive at this time and can afford to give extended time to someone like Curry, who may able to carve out a defined role rather than bounce back and forth between the bullpen and being a spot starter when needed.
