Cooper Ingle’s Triple-A dominance gives Guardians upper hand they can use in 2026 stretch run

At this time last week, it looked like Cooper Ingle could be bait that could help the Guardians nail a big fish at this year’s trade deadline thanks to his prospect pedigree and strong performance in Triple-A. 

But the trade deadline came and went, and Ingle was still entrenched in the Columbus Clippers’ lineup. And honestly, that’s not a bad thing. It would be one thing if Ingle was sitting in Triple-A and the Guardians’ big league lineup looked the same, but Chris Antonetti and Co. were able to upgrade Cleveland’s roster without dipping into the top tier of its talent. 

And their ability to add to the roster without trading away Ingle clearly changes the conversation around his strong run of play in the minors.

Instead of being the final sweetener in a potential trade, it’s a tangible example of how Ingle could help the Guardians down the stretch if he ever gets called up again.

Cooper Ingle could be an X-factor for the Guardians down the stretch

While Ingle’s first big league cameo didn’t go as planned, he’s been playing like a man possessed since he got sent back down to the minors at the start of July. Ingle has posted an eye-popping .393/.461/.697 slashline with six home runs, 20 RBI, 9 doubles and 12 walks. Talk about a heater. 

That brings us to the Guardians’ current roster. Although the Guardians put together a lethargic effort against the Mets in their first series since the trade deadline, they remade their roster by adding Nathaniel Lowe and Angel Genao while sending Kyle Manzardo and David Fry down to Triple-A and designating Gabriel Arias for assignment. 

After spending a lot of the season going with the status quo, it was a much-needed shot in the arm for a team that has a clear path to a postseason spot, but has yet to put together the consistent play needed to earn it. 

And, if those offensive struggles continue, it’s going to be time for the Guardians to call on Ingle once again.

It may require the Guardians to go out of their comfort zone and put him behind the plate (which they didn’t seem comfortable doing during his time call-up), but they should do whatever they can to get his bat in the lineup. 

One clear avenue they could make that happen is by calling him up in place of Angel Martinez. Martinez entered the season as a key part of the team’s outfield, but he entered the weekend with a .264 on-base percentage on the season while going just 5-for-33 since returning from a foot fracture.

Normally the Guardians would be fine letting him ride through his issues, but they went against that grain by demoting Manzardo and Fry to Triple-A. 

It’s time for them to make a similar move to get Ingle back in the big leagues.
