The Cleveland Indians will soon be a thing of the past as multiple reports state they will be changing their team name.

Just months after the NFL’s Washington Team opted to drop the “Redskins” from their team name, the Cleveland Indians are reportedly set to make a change.

David Waldstein and Michael S. Schmidt of the New York Times reported Sunday that Cleveland plans to “drop Its Indians team name” as pressure for sports teams to stop using “Native American names and imagery as team names and mascots.”

While the team has not formally announced any such decision, the New York Times reports an official announcement could come this week.

The report also states that the team has not decided on a new name as the transition includes several factors. Thus, there is a chance the team keeps the Indians name and uniforms for the 2021 season before making a switch for 2022. However, they could also follow the same model as the Washington NFL Team who is still searching for a team name and, in the meantime, rebranded and temporarily renamed themselves the “Washington Football Team.”

More from Away Back Gone

With Cleveland set to make a change, other teams such as baseball’s Atlanta Braves, the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs may also see an increase in pressure to make a change and help eliminate Native American themed names from pro sports.
