The Cleveland Indians decided against picking up Boone Logan’s 2018 option, which isn’t too surprising given the price tag associated with keeping him.

The Cleveland Indians aren’t actively slashing the payroll, but Boone Logan was a name that came up as a potential cut heading into 2018.

The Indians were faced with a decision regarding Logan’s $7 million club option for 2018, and after an injury-shortened season, fans saw what was coming.

The Indians get that contract off the books, but do owe Logan a $1 million buyout. Still, that is $6 million extra to be used toward players like Carlos Santana and Jay Bruce.

More from Away Back Gone

Logan may have stuck around if he was on a smaller deal, but it is hard to rationalize paying him $7 million for a role that he struggled in during the 2017 season, especially after Tyler Olson‘s breakout season.

Logan only appeared in 38 games, logging 21 innings, never living up to his contract. It is fair to say he could have turned things around if not for a season-ending injury, but comparing his stats to the scoreless year had by Olson and the decision to cut Logan was easy to make.

This move comes at a time when Bryan Shaw may be leaving Cleveland as well, as his production the last few years has set him up for a major contract somewhere in the league.

Perhaps a closer role is in store for the man so many in Cleveland love to hate.

Joe Smith is also a free agent, so the bullpen could be the one part of the roster that sees some turnover in 2018. However, fans won’t be missing Logan too much, and some fans may not even think twice about him being gone.
