The Cleveland Indians won their sixth in a row, topping the Seattle Mariners by a score of 3-1 Monday night. Trevor Bauer (4-2) was as dominant as he’s every been in picking up the win. The win moved the Indians to 32-24 on the season and thanks to a Kansas City loss the Tribe is now 2.5 games ahead of the Royals in the Central Division. The loss drops the Mariners to 31-26 on the season and falling to four games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.

Bauer has had his ups and downs this season but last night he was at the top of his game allowing just one run over 7 2/3 innings. It was his longest outing of the season and without a doubt his best. He struck out a season high 10 while walking just one and allowing just five hits. All 10 of his strikeouts came after the third inning and 10 of his final 14 outs were via strikeouts.
The lone run he allowed came in the third inning when Nori Aoki smacked a two-out single to center scoring Ketel Marte and giving the Mariners a 1-0 lead. The Mariners never had much of a chance after that. After a close call on a Seth Smith flyout to the wall in center field, Bryan Shaw relieved Bauer and got the final out of the 8th, striking out Robinson Cano. Cody Allen then came on and worked a perfect 9th inning for his 12th save of the season.
The Indians weren’t able to do much against Mariners starter James Paxton (0-2), who reached 100 mph multiple times and struck out 10 in his six innings of work. Mariners rookie Edwin Diaz made his major league debut in the 7th and also reached 100 several times, even topping out at 101 mph. Despite the blazing velocity, the Indians were able to scrap together just enough for the victory. In the top of the 4th, the Indians were able to answer the Mariners run with a pair of their own, thanks in part to some poor Mariners’ defense.
After a one-out single by Carlos Santana, Jose Ramirez doubled down the left field line to score Santana who was able to score thanks to an error by catcher Chris Iannetta who dropped the relay throw from the outfield. The drop also allowed Ramirez to go to third base with just one out and he scored on Juan Uribe‘s sacrifice fly, giving the Tribe a 2-1 lead. Both runs would be unearned that inning. The Indians then added their third run in the top of the 5th on a solo home run by Rajai Davis, his sixth of the year. Davis’s career high in home runs for a season is just eight (done multiple times).

The Indians will look to make it seven in a row when Cody Anderson (1-3, 6.81 ERA) takes on the Mariners and Wade Miley (5-2, 5.85) tonight at Safeco Field. As mentioned yesterday, Anderson is taking the place of Danny Salazar, who has been bumped back to Sunday due to some shoulder fatigue. Carlos Carrasco also gets his start bumped back one day, keeping Anderson on his normal four days of rest. The Tribe will need to make a roster move (yet to be announced) to add Anderson to the roster with Austin Adams as the most likely candidate. First pitch is at 10:10 pm.
