The Cleveland Indians opened a new series against the Philadelphia Phillies

The Cleveland Indians activated Tommy Hunter from the disabled list yesterday. Hunter had been recovering from a hernia surgery, and he looked fine in the process. In nine innings with Triple-A Columbus, he struck out four batters while allowing an earned run on seven hits and no walks.

Hunter should be a nice addition to the Indians’ bullpen, as he played a large role in the Baltimore Orioles bullpen form 2013 to 2014. In those two years, he posted sub-three earned run averages while posting solid peripherals. Last year began well for him, but he flopped after a mid-season trade to the Chicago Cubs.

On the flip side of the transaction, the Cleveland Indians designated Ross Detwiler for assignment. Detwiler, 30, joined the Tribe for Spring Training on a minor league assigned, but he proved his worth and made the team’s Opening Day roster. Despite only pitching for four innings, those were four innings too many for most Indians fans. He allowed three earned runs on three hits and four walks.

The left-hander was once a promising member of the Washington Nationals’ starting rotation, and he posted a 3.40 earned run average back in 2012. The past few seasons, however, have been washes for the pitcher.

On another note, our own Matt Bretz previewed the Cleveland Indians-Philadelphia Phillies series that opened last night. Corey Kluber opened the three-game set against Adam Morgan, and the game was a nail-biter. Jason Kipnis hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to put the Indians up 3-0, but the Phillies struck back in the bottom of the fifth to even the score. The game stayed tied until 11th when Ryan Howard hit a walk-off home run for the Phillies off Cody Allen.

Trevor Bauer will make his first start of the season tomorrow. He will face the righty Jerad Eickhoff, who has pitched either very well or very poorly so far this season. Then come Danny Salazar and Vincent Velasquez. The Indians need to win big this series to make up some ground on the first-place Chicago White Sox.
