The Cleveland Indians bullpen made it more exciting than it needed to be, but they topped the New York Mets 7-5on Saturday.

Last night saw the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Mets in a game that ended up becoming a lot closer than initially thought. The Mets jumped out to take an early lead when Curtis Granderson went deep off Josh Tomlin in the first inning. Tomlin managed to stave off any further damage until leaving with a hamstring cramp after the fifth inning.

Across the next three innings, the Indians’ bullpen held the Mets scoreless while the offense tallied up seven runs. Bryan Shaw, however, imploded in the eighth inning, allowing four runs on two home runs. With a two-run lead, Cody Allen recorded a four-out save to end the ballgame.

Yesterday’s game was a big game for Tomlin, and he did not disappoint. Across five innings of work, he amassed six strikeouts while only allowing four base runners. Tomlin pitched fairly well in ten starts for the Cleveland Indians last year, but advanced metrics did not love his work. Despite his glittery 3.02 earned run average, fielding independent metrics felt that a mark around 3.77 better fit his skills.

In other news, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported that Terry Francona wanted to see more production from Lonnie Chisenhall before activating him from the disabled list. The outfielder struggled heavily in Spring Training, and he had yet to impress during his rehab assignments.

Finally, Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer discussed past April’s in his latest piece. The Indians have tended to get off to poor starts, and last year’s 7-14 April became a significant obstacle down the road. The Indians are 5-4 after last night’s win, and that has put them in a much better position than in past years. This said, we cannot be too excited about this start, as the team still sits in fourth place in their division.
