Could the Cleveland Indians sign a third baseman?
Several Indians-related stories broke into the news yesterday. One such story, as Matt R. Lyons of Let’s Go Tribe wrote, was that the Cleveland Indians were not ruling out adding a position player. He noted that the Indians’ signing of Mike Napoli seemed to be the end of free-agent additions, but FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported that this might not be the case.

Rosenthal continued to speculate that the Tribe could add a third baseman before the end of the off-season, specifically Juan Uribe or David Freese. Other potential targets, as Lyons suggested, could be Dexter Fowler or Austin Jackson. Of all the listed players, only Fowler would require the Indians to forfeit their first-round pick in next year’s draft.
In other news, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com answered several questions in his latest edition of Hey, Hoynsie. Perhaps the most notable was James’ pondering whether the Indians would go after a big-time free agent to counteract the recent moves that other American League Central teams have made. Hoynes seemed confident that the Indians would not do so, but they could perhaps add a few smaller pieces, such as Juan Uribe or David Freese.
Also from that same article, a fan named David wrote in asking whether next year’s thin free agent class, especially for pitchers, weighed into the front office’s decision not to trade a starting pitcher now. Hoynes acknowledged the validity of that suggestion, and he also added that more importantly the Indians learned the value of those pitchers.
