Cleveland Indians Roundup: Notes on Arbitration; 2016 Projections

How will the Cleveland Indians fair in arbitration next year?

Yesterday had many arbitration-related topics enter the Cleveland Indians blogosphere. To start, Andrew Schmid wrote that the Tribe completed its portion of arbitration by signing Cody Allen, Josh Tomlin, Lonnie Chisenhall, and Jeff Manship. All of the four made a positive impact with the Indians last year, with Chisenhall and Manship surprising the baseball world with their performances.

Slightly before then, Nicholas D. Blazek noted that the Indians and Bryan Shaw agreed to a one-year contract. Shaw became the second Indian to avoid arbitration with the team. His $2.75 million salary marked a sizable raise over his 2015 pay, and the right-hander certainly deserved this increase after turning in another quality season.

In other news, Matt R. Lyons of Let’s Go Tribe discusses the potential arbitration plans for next season. As he states, Cody Allen will continue to get more and more expensive with each additional save. Closers traditionally cost much more in arbitration than other relievers, and Allen is no exception. Additionally, Danny Salazar and Trevor Bauer, both of whom should receive a hefty raise, will enter arbitration for the first time next year.

Finally, Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer explains that while FanGraphs predicts the Cleveland Indians to win the American League Central next year, 2015’s similar projection should remind fans that they could be wrong. Of course, last year’s faulty prediction does not necessarily sentence the new one to death; predictions are just best guesses. Also from that piece, Pluto recounts his 2008 American League Manager of the Year vote in which he selected Ron Gardenhire first and Joe Maddon second. He writes that it was the dumbest vote he has ever made in sports, but he also uses this as a reminder that three people declined to list Ken Griffey, Jr. on their Hall of Fame ballot.
