Cleveland Indians Roundup: Indians Avoid Arbitration with Zach McAllister, Trade Kirby Yates

The Cleveland Indians had plenty of breaking news on Friday:

The Cleveland Indians had several big stories hit yesterday. First, news broke that the team traded reliever Kirby Yates to the New York Yankees for cash. The Indians acquired Yates back in late November, and he spent very little time with the team. Yates, 28, has seen little time in the major leagues. Over his 56 career innings with the Tampa Bay Rays, he logged a 5.27 earned run average, which advanced metrics label as somewhat reflective of his talent.

Perhaps Yate’s biggest asset was the ability to strikeout batters. Across that same timespan, he has struckout over 10 batters per nine innings. This said, he frequently struggled with control. Perhaps most concerning this that he had been an extreme fly ball pitcher with the Rays, and this can often lead to problems with the longball.

In other news, the Indians have re-signed Zach McAllister to a one-year contract to avoid arbitration. The deal is worth $1.3 million, and it marks a sizable raise over last year’s $520,400 mark. Its size, however, still falls short of the $1.7 million contract that my models have projected.

Finally, Joseph Colon was suspended 50 games for failing a second drug test. Colon, 25, was the Tribe’s 12th round pick in 2009. He reached Triple-A for the first time last year after converting to the bullpen. It took him five years to reach Double-A.
