Cleveland Indians Roundup: Indians Trade for Dan Otero; Starting Pitching Trade Rumors

Cleveland Indians Acquire Dan Otero; Dodgers in talks for Carlos Carrasco, Danny Salazar

Quite a bit of Indians-related news broke yesterday. First, the Cleveland Indians acquired relief pitcher Dan Otero from the Philadelphia Phillies. Otero, 31 in February, pitched for the Oakland Athletics over the course of the past three seasons, but the Phils claimed him earlier this month. He posted two spectacular seasons in 2013 and 2014, although he worked almost entirely in low-leverage situations. The right-hander should help to mitigate the risk of regression from several relievers who broke out for the Indians last year.

In other news, Jordan Freemyer of mlbdailydish.com wrote about Jon Morosi’s tweet that the Los Angeles Dodgers reached out to the Indians about Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar. This came as no surprise given the Dodgers’ lack of success at adding pitching this off-season. After watching the Atlanta Braves receive a king’s ransom for Shelby Miller, the price for any of the Tribe’s pitchers could be sky-high.

To round out the pitching rumors, the Cleveland Indians re-signed Jarrett Grube to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training. The 34-year-old pitched for the Indians’ Triple-A affiliate for much of last year, logging a 2.26 earned run average in the process. He made 13 starts in 15 total appearances. Grube recorded two outs with the Los Angles Angels back in 2014 in his only big-league appearance.
