Clippers’ Tyler Cloyd Tosses a No-Hitter

Tyler Cloyd, a 27-year-old, right-handed starting pitcher for the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, tossed the first no-hitter in the history of Huntington Park on Wednesday night, as the Clippers beat the Louisville Bats 13-0. Cloyd struck out six and had a perfect game going until he hit Donnie Murphy in the top of the 9th inning. Cloyd improved to 9-5, while lowering his ERA to 3.91 over 133.2 innings.

Cloyd was acquired off of waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies in October of 2013 before becoming a free agent and re-signing with the Indians in mid-December. The 6’3″ right-hander has made 19 appearances, including 17 starts, in the major leagues, all with the Phillies, but he has clearly made himself an option for the Indians with his performance this season. After another start with zero walks, Cloyd has issued just 24 free passes in his 133.2 innings, just 1.6 per nine innings.

Throwing strikes has been the norm in his entire career, as Cloyd has averaged just two walks per nine innings over 879 career minor league innings. The 2008, 18th round pick out of the University of Nebraska will likely continue to refine his craft in Columbus, but he will be valuable depth while showing the skills necessary to thrive at the major league level.
