Mike Aviles has spent the bulk of his career playing shortstop where a strong accurate arm is part of the skill set.
Beginning last season Indians Manager Tito Francona has allowed his positional flexibility to grow to include left field.
In yesterday’s Indians 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox Aviles had an opportunity to show off his arm strength and accuracy from left field in doubling up an unsuspecting Conor Gillaspie.
Gillaspie singled to start the second inning and Gordon Beckham sent a fly ball toward the stands in left field. Gillaspie took off and had the play in front of him and saw Aviles make the catch and retreated back to first base. What he didn’t know was Aviles uncorked a laser back toward Carlos Santana at first base.
Santana does an excellent job of not letting Gillaspie see that a throw was coming and at the last second he stretched to make the catch to complete the double play.
