When it comes to players capable of absolutely clobbering the ball, Cleveland Guardians slugger Jhonkensy Noel is a name that should be mentioned more. Noel has proven that he can drive a ball like few others can, with his latest home run being clear evidence of exactly that.
With the Guardians holding a slim 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th, Noel stepped into the batter's box ready to face Minnesota Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson. A hanging 85 MPH changeup from Woods Richardson on the third pitch of the at-bat was crushed and promptly deposited into the left field stands. This extended Cleveland's lead at the time to 2 while also producing a sound that must be heard to be believed (behind this link).
Guardians slugger Jhonkensy Noel just hit a ridiculously hard home run (sound on!)
There is just a different sound that is made when someone who can generate a ton of power connects with a pitch thrown. The boom at the point of contact reverberates from the batter's box throughout the infield as the ball soars over the outfield and into the stands.
This is the sign that a player can absolutely obliterate a ball if he is given the opportunity to do so. Noel's 450 foot blast on Thursday afternoon shows that this is an accurate description of one aspect of his offensive profile.
A potential turning point for Jhonkensy Noel?
It has been a rough start to the season for Jhonkensy Noel, slashing .182/.207/.255 coming into play on Thursday, Cleveland's slugger had just one home run on the year before crushing the pitch from Woods Richardson. This was Noel's fifth hit in his last three starts and his second home run during that span.
If this is the beginning of Noel correcting his issues and becoming a player who contributes on a more regular basis, it would certainly help alleviate the concerns about Cleveland's offense and would also take some pressure off of the bats at or near the top of the Guardians' lineup.
