Spring training is well underway, and with that comes decisions that need to be made on who will and will not make the major league roster for the 2025 season. This process becomes a bit more difficult when having to juggle players who are out of minor league options. The following four Guardians players currently have that distinction and it could play a role as to whether or not they are in Cleveland's plans for this season.

1. Sam Hentges - Relif Pitcher

Of the four Guardians players who are out of options, Sam Hentges is the only one whose performance in spring will not impact his roster status. This is, unfortunately, due to Hentges undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder this past September that will keep him out of action for all of 2025. Expect Hentges to spend the entire season on the injured list while he recovers and works his way back toward contributing in 2026.

After a frustrating rookie season that saw Hentges struggle on the mound with a 6.67 ERA, 1.776 WHIP, and 8.9 K/9, the following three seasons were significantly more impactful. Dating back to 2022, Hentges has a 2.93 ERA, 1.116 WHIP, and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 138 appearances. This should be the level of performance expected from Hentges upon his return to Cleveland's bullpen.
