Last year, Tarik Skubal spent almost all of the MLB season dominating the Cleveland Guardians. After posting a 0.64 ERA against Cleveland in 28 regular season innings (the most he had against any one opponent), he added an electric start of 7 2/3 innings in the Wild Card Series.

He’s not going to get nearly as many chances to stifle the Guardians in 2026. On Monday afternoon, the Tigers announced that Skubal, the reigning two-time Cy Young Award Winner, is set to undergo surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow.

While the injury isn’t expected to keep him out for the entire regular season, it’s obviously a huge blow to a Tigers team that’s looking to stop the Guardians’ reign atop AL Central.

And, on the flip side, it’s an injury that gives the Guardians a great opportunity to build their AL Central lead over a Tigers team that just lost one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Tarik Skubal’s injury could have a huge ripple effect on the Guardians

Although Skubal’s injury would be bad enough on its own, it’s coming at a time when the Tigers’ rotation is paper-thin thanks to injuries to fellow rotation-mates Justin Verlander, Casey Mize  and Reese Olson.

The remaining arms in Detroit’s rotation have been able to tread water in their absence (3.72 starter ERA), but losing Skubal obviously changes that equation.

Skubal posted a 2.70 ERA in 43 1/3 innings prior to getting hurt and great against the Braves his last time out, but manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that Skubal’s arm “locked up” at some point over the last 24 hours.

Not only will the injury impact Skubal’s 2026 but it’ll also have a huge impact on his impending free agency after his record-setting run through arbitration last offseason.

Meanwhile, the Guardians’ rotation has compiled a strong 3.79 ERA that would be even lower if not for Slade Cecconi’s struggles this season.

Gavin Williams has continued his ascent into ace-dom, while Parker Messick has continued his star turn from last year. Even Tanner Bibee’s gotten in on the party, though he laid an egg against the Royals on Monday night.

With Skubal on the shelf, the Tigers will now lean on a starting rotation that consists of Framber Valdez (who has looked a bit pedestrian this season), Jack Flaherty (who has a 5.90 ERA) and Keider Montero.

The Tigers played in their first non-Skubal game on Monday, and Ty Madden threw five scoreless innings in bulk work before Detroit’s bullpen blew it against the scuffling Red Sox.

Although the Guardians and Tigers tied atop the American League Central at 18-18, the Guardians being .500 at this juncture is a bit of a win considering how tough of a schedule they had at the start of the season.

But they don’t have an excuse now that Skubal’s out. This is the time for the Guardians to build a big lead in the AL Central.
