Petey Halpin may have spent most of the 2026 season as a part-time player for the Guardians, but he entered the postseason with one signature swing under his belt thanks to his go-ahead home run against the White Sox in the second-to-last week of the regular season.
Turns out his bat had one more signature swing in it.
On Thursday, Halpin recorded a homer ‘heard around Northeast Ohio when he mashed a go-ahead shot off Rays starter Griffin Jax that came with a bat flip fitting of the moment.

Halpin made sense on the Guardians' postseason roster given he was a clear defensive upgrade over Angel Martínez, but he’s become a mainstay in the lineup thanks to Martínez’s struggles in October.
Martínez may be a crucial piece of the Guardians’ lineup, but Vogt made the decision to pull him out of the lineup thanks to a 1-for-18 start to the postseason.
Even if his struggles made it clear that Martínez was expendable, any manager benching their regular season home run leader during the postseason is bound to be second-guessed.
That kind of second-guessing won’t be needed today thanks to Halpin’s huge homer that moved him a step closer to becoming a Cleveland legend.
Petey Halpin confirmed he's going to be Guardians' center fielder for foreseeable future with huge ALCS homer against Rays
Halpin’s homer came at a huge time after the Rays took the lead against Gavin Williams two innings earlier on an RBI triple from Chandler Simpson. It looked like Rays starter Griffin Jax was starting to settle in after the Guardians recorded a run across him in the first inning, but Patrick Bailey and Halpin quickly changed that.
After Halpin got on base with a Baltimore chop in the infield, Halpin left the yard on a sinker that Jax left over the plate. Halpin knew it was gone the moment it left his bat, and he capitalized on the moment by watching the ball sail over the fence before sending his bay up to the sky.

Martínez may end up playing a huge part for the Guardians at some point in this postseason, but it’s hard to believe that’s going to happen any time soon.
Not only has Halpin become a mainstay in center, but Steven Kwan is entrenched in left while Jo Adell and Chase DeLauter have been alternating between right field and designated hitter.
Martínez looked like he had fixed his biggest liability earlier in the postseason when he had a great game in the field against the White Sox in Cleveland’s postseason opener, but it’s been his bat that’s let the Guardians down so far.
Meanwhile, Halpin's been a dual-threat who has been one of the most dangerous hitters in Cleveland's lineup. There's still a lot of baseball left in the Guardians' series against the Rays, but Halpin's signature moment helped the Guardians keep up their momentum from splitting the series in Tampa.
