Welcome to Snapback Saturday, your weekly recap of the Cleveland Guardians' action.
This week, your Guardians showed some serious fight to prove their recent 10-game slide was firmly in the rearview mirror ahead of a huge series against the Kansas City Royals.
Snapback Saturdays: Guardians get back on track
They put together a strong performance by dominating their weekend series against the Athletics before taking three out of four against the Orioles. The week kicked off with a bang on Sunday, as the Guardians defeated the A's 8-2. David Fry exploded for a career-high four RBI, while Gavin Williams was lights out on the mound and struck out out 11 batters over seven innings.
On Monday, the offense continued its surge against the Orioles with a 10-5 victory. José Ramírez launched a three-run homer, while Kyle Manzardo also went deep and Steven Kwan reached base fives times. It was one of the best performances this year for the Guardians' offense.
The winning continued on Tuesday, with the Guardians taking down the Orioles 6-3 to get back to a .500. Ramírez homered again, and young guns like Angel Martínez and Bryan Rocchio continued to contribute big hits.
They also got a great sign on the mound, as Joey Cantillo dazzled in five innings and continued to show why the Guardians should keep him in the starting rotation.
Wednesday saw a tight 3-2 victory over Baltimore, with Kwan delivering the clutch, go-ahead single in the eighth inning. Emmanuel Clase locked down his 23rd save to cap off another series win.
While the Guardians lost 4-3 on Thursday and couldn't compete the four-game sweep, the week was still a massive success.
Martínez led the way this week by going 9-for-24 (.429) during the week with three doubles and a home run, while Ramírez and Kwan both mashed multiple home runs.
On the pitching side, every starter went at least five innings, with Williams' start of 7 1/3 innings leading the way. Jakob Junis, Clase, Kolby Allard and Hunter Gaddis all threw two scoreless innings. In total, it was one of the best weeks the Guardians have put together all year.
Overall, the Guardians finished the week with an excellent 5-2 record, have won 11 of their last 13 games and sit just 2 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race. Next up is a key series against the Kansas City Royals, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday.
