When it comes to this year’s iteration of Guardians’ spring training, there’s perhaps no player who has helped themselves more than outfielder Kahlil Watson.

Although Watson didn’t enter the spring with a ton of pressure on his shoulders since he’s less than four months into his tenure on the Guardians’ 40-man roster, he’s done nothing but open eyes so far in Cactus League play.

And that star turn got a new chapter earlier this week thanks to MLB Pipeline’s latest ranking of the top prospects in the Guardians’ system. Not only did Watson make his debut in MLB Pipeline’s ranking, but he did so via a huge leap that personifies just how hard he’s worked to improve over the past couple seasons.

Guardians prospect Kahlil Watson could work his way into the Guardians’ 2026 plans

Watson entered MLB Pipeline’s rankings as the Guardians’ No. 15 prospect. While that technically means that he jumped 15 spots since he went from being unranked to No. 15, in reality he climbed more spots since there were plenty of other prospects ahead of him in the team’s pecking order.

In other words, he went from being a project to being a key part of the Guardians’ future.

After coming up as a shortstop, Watson has successfully transitioned to the outfield and could theoretically play all three positions thanks to his strong arm and plus-speed.

Watson made his Triple-A debut last season and slugged .477 in 43 games at the level, which set up his eventual addition to the 40-man roster.

He’s followed that up with a strong spring (.600, two doubles, triple) that’s clearly helped his standing on the team’s roster.

While he has an uphill battle to make the roster due to the number of established options and higher-rated prospects ahead of him, it seems clear that he’s beginning to become a part of the team’s short-term future.

MLB Pipeline’s list of the top-five Guardians prospects was Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter, Angel Genao, Ralphy Velazquez and Parker Messick, which wasn’t much of a surprise given that all five of them are ranked in the publication’s list of the top 100 prospects.

Bazzana, DeLauter and Messick all figure to be part of the Guardians’ plans in 2026, while Genao and Velazquez are likely a year away from making any kind of significant big league contribution.

Reliever Andrew Walters had the biggest fall of the prospects on the list, as he went from being the team’s No. 12 prospect to No. 26 thanks in large part to a lat injury that ended his 2025 campaign after just two appearances.
