Red Sox crazy upcoming weather weekend should have Guardians praising MLB schedule makers

Later today, the Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox will kick off a three-game series in Fenway Park in chilly conditions that will resemble postseason baseball. 

Those conditions will look downright tropical compared to what’s coming this weekend, as most weather projections have Boston getting hit with a Nor’easter that could dump gallons of rain on the Northeast at a time when the Red Sox are supposed to be playing a crucial series against the Chicago Cubs. 

While any delays or cancellations to that series could have huge ramifications on the American League and National League postseason pictures, the Guardians should be in the much more temperate conditions of Kansas City by then for their season-ending series against the Royals. 

For one, the Guardians got some good karma in regard to their schedule.

The Red Sox are going to get slammed by bad weather as soon as the Guardians leave town

Even if the Red Sox end up playing all three of their games against the Cubs this weekend, it seems at least one of them will be impacted by the weather considering there’s a 95% chance of rain on Saturday per Accuweather. 

That rain could also leak its way into the Red Sox’s series against the Guardians since they may need to plan for some kind of disruption to their pitching plans. They’re planning on starting Peyton Tolle, Sonny Gray and Ranger Suarez in their three games against the Guardians, but that upcoming storm could force them to adjust their pitching plans ahead of an unconventional series. 

MLB removed single-game tiebreakers in the new CBA, so every tiebreaker is now determined by a litany of statistical tiebreakers. Because of that, the Red Sox and Cubs may need to play every game of the series so the tiebreakers can go into full effect. 

A precedent for this was set in 2024 when the Mets and Braves played a doubleheader the Monday after the season ended after they had to bang a game for weather earlier in the month, and the Red Sox and Cubs could be forced into that exact scenario. 

The Red Sox are all but guaranteed to head to New York to take on the Yankees for the American League Wild Card Series, while the Cubs are in the midst of a dogfight with the Padres and Phillies in the National League’s Wild Card standings. 

The Cubs are pretty much a lock to make the postseason, but there are still plenty of seeding issues that still need to be figured out. 

For the Guardians, the plan is simple: Win their three games in Boston and get out of town in time to avoid the inclement weather. Things are going to be a bit more complicated for the Red Sox and Cubs, but that’s not the Guardians’ problem.
