Yes, the Cleveland Guardians should consider bringing back this former infielder
A very familiar face may be available for the Cleveland Guardians to bring back into the fold, and it should absolutely be under consideration if they are given the opportunity to do so. Needing to make room for a returning Mookie Betts, the Los Angeles Dodgers have designated Amed Rosario for assignment, bringing an end to his 12-game stint with the team and his second within the last two seasons.
When it comes to players the Dodgers were going to move on from to accommodate the return of Betts from the injured list, Rosario was an obvious choice. Rosario is a very average player, and Los Angeles can afford to DFA players with that designation.
If the Dodgers were so willing to move on from Rosario, why should the Guardians bring him back?
Well, this is a very easy question to answer. Have you seen the state of the shortstop position in Cleveland? Brayan Rocchio, Gabriel Arias, Daniel Schneemann, and Tyler Freeman have all tried and mostly failed to take hold of this open position. Rocchio has seen the lion's share of time at short this year, but he has been a black hole offensively, and his defense can be very questionable at times. Meanwhile, Arias is a Quad-A player, Schneemann probably is too, for that matter, and is best served in a utility bench role, and Freeman seems like he could be on the way out relatively soon.
Now, the important thing to note is not that Rosario is by any means some type of star-caliber player or someone who is above average, he's not. It is about Rosario being a clear upgrade over the names that have been trotted out at shortstop since his departure last year. Yes, Rosario is very much an all-around average player and is not going to be anything more than that, but at the same time, he is still better than Cleveland's current options available to them.
Of course, suggesting the Guardians do it is one thing, the chances of it actually happening are another. This would not be due to a lack of interest necessarily but rather Cleveland being near the bottom in waiver order. There is a very good chance another team picks up Rosario before the Guardians even get a chance to. But if somehow he falls to them, they should not think twice and bring back their former shortstop for another go around.
