It’s an ALDS rematch from last fall and luckily for everyone with ears, Bob Costas won’t be on the call. Tonight, Game 1 of this three game series, Domingo German will start for the 6-3 New York Yankees and Shane Bieber will go for the 6-4 Cleveland Guardians.

If the New York Yankees want to win the AL East again and get back to the DS, then they’ll need to keep Tampa Bay, the hottest team in baseball, within reach.

German has made one start for the Yankees this season and is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA. Bieber has a 2.25 ERA across his first two outings of the year, but Cleveland is 0-2 when he takes the mound. The Guardians are favored to get their ace his first win of the season.

Yankees vs. Guardians odds, run line and total

Yankees vs. Guardians prediction and pick

Cleveland has given Shane Bieber no run support this season. In his first outing, he went 6.0 scoreless innings and scattered six hits with no walks. That wasn’t enough for a win. Next time out he went 6.0 and allowed three earned runs on just three hits with seven strikeouts. He’s pitching like his Cy Young self once again, but Cleveland is 22nd in team OPS. Somehow, the Guardians are seventh in runs scored with only five home runs as a team.

It helps that Cleveland has the second most stolen bases of any team, 15, while only getting caught twice. However, I don’t see this level of run production continuing for long. They need to be centered around their pitching staff like they were last season. Bieber will have his hands full with this Yankee lineup, Judge has an OPS well north of 1.000, and Gleyber Torres is getting on base over half the time right now. However, there is no reason to believe we’ll get a bad start from the Cleveland ace.

Bieber will be able to battle and keep the New York lineup in check and even with German struggling in his first outing of the year, I think Cleveland’s lineup will struggle even more. Their run production will come down as the year goes on and I don’t think they’ll give Bieber the run support he needs.
