Guardians still considered a top five team in recent power ranking
It is pretty clear by this point that the Cleveland Guardians are one of the best teams in baseball this season. This is a team that has put last year's offensive struggles in the rearview mirror and has been able to start the year with a 39-20 record as the month of June is now underway. With their success so far this season, it is no wonder why they are still near the top of a recent MLB power ranking.
Cleveland comes in as the number five overall team according to Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter in his recently published MLB Power Rankings: Yankees vs. Phillies for No. 1, Mariners Join Top 10, Cubs Slide. The Guardians went 3-3 over the past week, losing a series in Colorado followed by winning a series at home against Washington. Because of this, Cleveland dropped down two spots from their spot in the previous week's ranking.
Reuter made sure to mention the recent success at the plate of David Fry. Cleveland's super utility do everythingman recently joined an elite group of which Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds were the only members.
The offense has found an unexpected contributor in David Fry, who is hitting .355/.493/.636 with eight home runs and 27 RBI while starting games at catcher, first base, left field and designated hitter.
There is no doubt thatthe surprising contributions the Guardians have received from Fry have played a massive part in their success this season. Cleveland has needed others to step up and produce alongside the likes of Jose Ramirez, Josh Naylor, and Steven Kwan, and they are getting that from Fry. It has also allowed them to part ways with unproductive players in recent weeks, such as Ramon Laureano and Estevan Florial. This is something that would not have happened so early in previous years, as there was no one else capable of picking up the slack. Now that they have another productive bat in the lineup, it may not be long before the team decides to move on from another disappointing bat on their roster.
