Cleveland Guardians Probable Pitcher and Starting Lineup vs New York Yankees August 21
Who is the Cleveland Guardians probable starting pitcher?
The Cleveland Guardians have tabbed Joey Cantillo as their starter for Wednesday's contest. Alex Cobb was originally scheduled to start this game, but a fractured fingernail has resulted in him landing on the injured list, with Cantillo taking his place.
Cantillo has a few starts under his belt this season, allowing nine runs in 13 innings across three games. While the numbers are far from good, seeing Cantillo go 5.2 innings against the Twins in his last appearance is at least somewhat encouraging, considering the previous two saw him pitch 3.1 and 4 innings. Cantillo being able to go past the 5-inning mark should take some pressure off of Cleveland's bullpen arms, and they'll need it after Tuesday night's 12-inning affair.
Who will the Cleveland Guardians lineup face?
New York will counter with Nestor Cortes as they look to get back into the win column following the extra-innings loss on Tuesday. Cortes is coming off a bounceback outing of sorts, throwing 7 innings of three-hit shutout baseball. However, it must be said that this came against the Chicago White Sox, hardly a formidable opponent in 2024.
A much better indicator of his pitching performance as of late would be his stat line from his previous five starts. Cortes has struggled, allowing 24 runs in 23.1 innings, including six home runs. Opponents have been slashing .360/.412/.670 in those matchups, indiciating that Cortes has not been pitching particularly well during this span. Expect an outing similar to those rather than his shutout performance against the lowly White Sox.
