Triston McKenzie gets the call for the Cleveland Guardians in their first matchup with the visiting Kansas City Royals. McKenzie has a 3.77 ERA, 1.378 WHIP, and 8.5 strikeouts per nine this season and is looking to put the Guardians in position to win his fourth consecutive game started (McKenzie has not received a win during this span).

The fifth-year right-hander is coming off a month which saw him allow 12 runs in 35.1 innings of work, despite having an issue with walks. There was only one occasion in May when McKenzie walked less than three batters, one free pass given in Cleveland's win over Houston on May 1st. Since then, McKenzie has walked three or more batters in every game, a continuation of an unfortunate season-long trend. This is something that cannot continue if the Guardians are going to win Game 1 against Kansas City.

The good news for McKenzie is that he has plenty of previous success pitching against the Royals, allowing just six hits in 47 at-bats, including a 3-18 with one home run for Salvador Perez and 2-9 with a double for Bobby Witt Jr.
