Parker Messick spent most of his first full MLB season helping the Guardians on the diamond. His ERA was dazzling (2.56), his strikeout total rose (193) and his overall profile became that of a frontline starter.
Now that production is going to help the Guardians off the diamond as well.
On Monday, MLB announced that Messick is a Cy Young finalist this season alongside Cam Schlittler and Dylan Cease. Not only is that an incredible honor for Messick, but it also means the Guardians are going to get an additional pick after the first round of the 2027 MLB Draft thanks to the Prospect Promotion Incentive.
The PPI system was installed to reward teams for promoting prospects early in the season, as it gives teams an extra draft pick if they have a Rookie of the Year finalist or a player finish in the top three in MVP or Cy Young voting prior to qualifying for arbitration.
While Messick helping the Guardians earn a PPI isn’t a surprise in itself since we knew he was going to be a Rookie of the Year finalist, him earning it via the Cy Young is a fun little honor as well. The Guardians can only earn one PPI pick from him, so they won’t get anything more if he wins Rookie of the Year or the Cy Young.
Parker Messick’s dominant 2026 is going to help the Guardians grow from within
Although Messick showed some flashes during his seven-game cameo with the Guardians in 2025, no one was prepared for how much of a leap he was going to take this season. But he broke camp with the Guardians in the spring after Logan Allen struggled in the final week of the spring, and the rest is history.
This is the second time MLB’s prospect incentive system has impacted the Guardians, though it’s the first time it comes with the added bonus of a draft pick. In 2023, Tanner Bibee came in second in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Gunnar Henderson, which meant he got a full year of service time despite not making his debut until the end of April (while the Guardians didn’t get anything).
Messick was on the roster all year so he was going to get a full year of service time no matter what, but the Guardians getting a draft pick out of it makes it even better.
The Guardians need to build through the draft given their lack of spending in free agency (under the current CBA system), so this pick will help them fill their coffers a bit more after they traded one of their picks away in last year’s draft in the Patrick Bailey deal.
They still put together a solid draft, but they can only deal away so many of those picks before it would impact their team-building philosophy. They won’t have to worry about that this year thanks to Messick’s performance.
