It will not be long before spring training is in full swing, but there is still a feeling that the Cleveland Guardians' current roster is somewhat incomplete. There is no doubt that bringing in a veteran with some experience would help alleviate some concerns about Cleveland's conservative offseason approach following their 92-win regular season and ALCS appearance.
The Athletic's Chad Jennings put together One last MLB free agent for every team: Finding new homes for 30 available players (subscription required)in an attempt to play matchmaker ahead of pitchers and catchers reporting. Jennings believes that 11-year veteran and two-time World Series Champion Kiké Hernandez would be a good fit in Cleveland. "He would be their best defensive option in center, their most experienced option at second, and another right-handed bat on a roster loaded with lefties and switch hitters," writes Jennings, and it is hard to argue against this logic.
Defensively, Hernandez would be a clear upgrade over Lane Thomas in center and could even push him into right field, making Cleveland's outfield defense notably better. It could also give the Guardians a short-term contingency plan at second in the event that Travis Bazzana's placeholders fail to impress in spring.
Hernandez may not be much of a hitter at this point in his career, as his .229/.281/.373 slash line and 85 OPS+ in 126 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season is far from encouraging. However, there would be more to Hernandez's presence in Cleveland should the Guardians bring him into the mix.
Positional flexibility has proven to be something the Guardians highly value, and having someone who can play all over the diamond, like Hernandez, would fit right into how they prefer to utilize their bench players. There is also the fact that bringing in someone with 11 years of experience under his belt to a team that is still pretty young could provide the type of leadership that teams seek from veterans on the roster.
Even if Hernandez would only be brought on as a part-time bench player rather than a starter, he would be a clear upgrade over Cleveland's other utility players on their roster. Because of that, offering him a contract is something the Guardians would be wise to thoroughly consider.
