The Cleveland Guardians are reaching a key portion of their season. They just lost a disappointing season to the Red Sox and after getting blown out by the Twins in the first game of this series, the next three games against Minnesota are going to be massive in establishing the AL Central hierarchy and determining potential tiebreakers. Unfortunately, the weather in the Cleveland area does not appear to be cooperating.
Rain has not arrived just yet and the worst of the crummy weather does appear to be passing south of the stadium, but more weather is expected to make it's way through soon. As a result, it was decided to throw the tarp on the field for now and the Guardians matchups with the Twins is officially in a rain delay.
Guardians vs. Twins Rain Delay: Latest updates on the weather and when the game will start
This is a tricky one because the big blobs on the radar don't appear to be the problem this evening. Frankly, if that was the system causing the delay, they probably just would have postponed the game. Instead, a secondary line of storms is expected to come through. While not a massive system, it does look like it could have some heavy rain and perhaps thunder hence the delay.
The good news is that the powers that be got ahead of this situation early. This allows the grounds crew to prepare for the weather and, in theory, keep the field in pretty good shape once play does resume. It also means that Cleveland doesn't have to burn Tanner Bibee and his start which could have easily been the case had this game been delayed within the first few innings.
We are not meteorologists here, but this doesn't look like a weather front that is likely to get this game postponed. Unless the field gets completely swamped somehow, it feels like this is a game that will get played tonight even if fans have to wait a while. This post will be updated as information becomes available including as to when the game is expected to start.
*Update - 8 PM EST, 7 PM CST*
There has still be little to no rain in the area, but the delay remains in place. A quick look at the radar shows that the line of storms that "could" be a problem should be passing by soon. Assuming things hold, we can expect more information here soon.
*Update - 9:04 PM EST, 8:04 PM CST*
We have a start time finally. After a small cell extended the delay for a bit longer than expected, it looks like first pitch will be at 9:20 PM (8:20 PM CST).
