It’s clear the Cleveland Guardians think highly of infield prospect Angel Genao. While that was evident in the offseason when they added the 21-year-old to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, it became even more evident over the weekend when the Guardians promoted Genao to Triple-A Columbus.Â
Genao had started the season at Double-A, where he posted a .271/.418/.412 slashline in 24 games. And now he’s going to be just one step away from helping the Guardians at the big league level.Â
The Cleveland Guardians Player Development System has announced the following promotions for today:

Transfer INF Angel Genao from AA Akron to AAA Columbus
Transfer RHP Justin Campbell from A+ Lake County to AA Akron
Transfer OF Jaison Chourio from A+ Lake County to AA Akron
Angel Genao could make his MLB debut by the end of 2026
This year was Genao’s second season at Double-A, albeit with much different results. Genao opened last season at Double-A but appeared in just 77 games due to a shoulder strain and hit just .259.Â
But that performance didn’t do anything to dissuade the Guardians’ internal feelings about him, and he’s rewarded that faith with a fantastic season thus far.Â
He burst onto the scene in 2024 when he opened the season at High-A Lynchburg and hit .341 with six homers and 12 steals in 44 games before being promoted to High-A Lake County.Â
Genao followed that up with a .322 batting average with four home runs and 13 steals and finished the year with the fifth-best batting average in the minors (.330).Â
While the Guardians have been a bit slow to promote top prospects in the past, they’ve shown plenty of aggressiveness in the past 12 months by promoting Chase DeLauter for his big league debut in the postseason and calling Bazzana up at a time when he was struggling in the minors.Â
Promoting Genao may be the most aggressive move out of all them, however, given his age and inexperience in the minors. But they may not get a choice should an injury arise given that he and Juan Brito are the Guardians’ lone minor league infielders who are on the 40-man roster.Â
There really isn’t room for Genao on the Guardians’ current big league roster thanks to Travis Bazzana being entrenched at second base and Brayan Rocchio playing well at short, but all it takes is one hamstring strain.Â
The Guardians also made an aggressive move in promoting Jaison Chourio from High-A to Double-A, marking the highest level the 20-year-old has played at.Â
Chourio, who is ranked as the Guardians’ No. 11 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, got off to a fantastic start at High-A (.317 batting average with seven doubles, two home runs, 18 walks and 10 steals) and is also a step closer to the big leagues.Â
Chourio also isn’t really known for his power (11 career home runs), but he’s another talented outfield prospect who could be a mainstay of the Guardians’ next core.Â
